In the October 18 municipal election, you will be voting for candidates whose opinions are relevant to reinstating fluoridation.

We asked each candidate for a yes (70x70_-_Checkmark_A.png) or no (70x70_-_X_A.png) response to the four questions below, and for comment:

  1. Do you personally support water fluoridation for Calgarians as a safe and effective public health measure that helps all Calgarians and, in particular, the most vulnerable, including children, seniors and people with disabilities?
  2. Will you campaign openly for water fluoridation in Calgary as part of your campaign?
  3. If the plebiscite vote favours fluoridation and you are elected a member of City Council, will you then work to have a motion placed before City Council by November 15, 2021?
  4. If the plebiscite vote favours fluoridation and you are elected a member of City Council, will you then vote in favour of fluoridation reinstatement?

Here is a list of candidates and their responses. Some responses have been edited for clarity and brevity.

"My view is this: Having decided to ask the voters to make the decision, Council needs to listen to the decision."

"Previously, Calgary Councils have asked voters six times to make the decision. In 1998, voters decided they wanted fluoridation. Ten years ago, Council reversed the voters’ decision and removed fluoride. Now Council has decided to ask again for the voters to make the decision. It is to make a mockery of democracy if we do not respect the decision the voters make. So as Mayor, I pledge to respect the decision that voters make."

"Calgarians have voted yes to community water fluoridation in the past, only to have it removed without consultation. I personally support community water fluoridation because of the extensive scientific body of evidence."

What had the greatest impact on your position on fluoridation in Calgary’s water?: "The scientific evidence & the recommendation of health professionals."

Will you campaign openly for water fluoridation in Calgary as part of your campaign?: "Yes. Community water fluoridation is recommended by professional organizations who have the expertise to weigh in on its efficacy and safety, such as the Canadian and American Dental Associations, Canada's Chief Dental Officer and the World Health Organization. I will share this information to allow residents to make their own informed choice about fluoride."

If the plebiscite vote favours fluoridation and you are elected a member of City Council, will you then work to have a motion placed before City Council by November 15, 2021?: "I will support such a motion if the plebiscite favours fluoridation. In the event that Calgarians vote "no" to fluoride, I will respect the public's choice, and will not support such a motion."

If the plebiscite vote favours fluoridation and you are elected a member of City Council, will you then vote in favour of fluoridation reinstatement?: "Yes. If we take the time to ask Calgarians about fluoride in a plebiscite and the public votes "yes", then we need to act. Similarly, if Calgarians vote "no", I don't think it would be appropriate to implement fluoride against the public's will."

"For 10 years, I've led an organization that each year supports 120 families whose parents have cognitive challenges. These are parents who are threatened with having their children removed from their care. These families also all live in poverty. Having flouride in the water helps ensure their children have good dental health which reduces the risk that these children will be removed from their parents' care. Not having flouride in the water disproportionately affects families living in poverty or with other barriers."

Will you campaign openly for water fluoridation in Calgary as part of your campaign?: "I will share my views and my experience supporting parents who live in poverty."

"The data available suggests that this will support dental health, with an extreme reduction of cavities on people from lower SES backgrounds. My dentist is my resource, and they have supported fluoridation. I must trust the science. "

"I grew up without full dental coverage. Meaning that even the most basic of things (cleanings) came out of my mother's pocket. The cost to my family of poor dental hygiene was very high, and truthfully, as a child of a single mother, watching me brush my teeth was not high on her priorities. If fluoridation helps to mitigate the cost of dental hygiene even a little, families will be more secure knowing their children are healthier and have a better chance at having strong oral health."

If the plebiscite vote favours fluoridation and you are elected a member of City Council, will you then work to have a motion placed before City Council by November 15, 2021?: "This is an issue that has plagued Calgary for far too long, I'd like to see it done and settled as soon as possible."

Both of them have indicated that all of the empirical research they have read has indicated that the dental health benefits are significant - especially for younger children, and that they have yet to see any reputable research showing measurable negative effects to people of any age who have their water fluoridated. For that reason, I believe the tangible public health benefits to our society are greater than the perceived concerns."

If the plebiscite vote favours fluoridation and you are elected a member of City Council, will you then work to have a motion placed before City Council by November 15, 2021?: "I believe that the weight of an affirmative plebiscite result should be enough to move forward without further delay."

"After spending some time taking a look at the issue from both sides I am confident in putting my support behind fluoride in Calgary’s water.

"Here is why:

"When I weigh the negatives with the positives I ultimately want to be a public servant that looks for cost effective ways to do the most for those who have the least and fluoride just makes sense.

"There is an ever increasingly large body of evidence (AHS, to show the benefits to dental health when fluoride (already naturally occuring) is at the ideal level in our water supply. That wasn’t enough for me to really get behind it as I weighed those pros and cons--it was the wider implications that ultimately won me over.

"More information is coming out every year about the diverse and interconnected nature of our health. For example, there have been huge recent leaps forward in understanding how our gut health (microbiome) impacts the rest of the body. So when I see work such as this article from Harvard Health I find myself in support of fluoride in Calgary’s drinking water.

"If we are helping children establish strong oral health that leads to better long term holistic health. That is something I want to support and not stand in the way of.

"I will remain open to new science and studies done on the subject matter but I am now in agreement that the $1.50 investment per person will actually be saving us far more down the road and promoting health for generations of Calgarians."

"My position is entirely a fiscal one. It will costs Calgarians over 12 million dollars to retrofit our system to be able to incorporate Flouride back into the system. The bottom line is we are broke and we can't continually fund everything we want out there. It is time we focus on needs over wants."

Will you campaign openly for water fluoridation in Calgary as part of your campaign?: "I will not campaign for or against Fluoride. I feel all new ventures should be looked at upon on their own merits as it involves tax dollars. We need to get back to providing the promised services at city hall rather than adding new one."

If the plebiscite vote favours fluoridation and you are elected a member of City Council, will you then vote in favour of fluoridation reinstatement?: "The peoples wishes in Ward 12 will always supersede my own. It is far time we actually have representatives that represent our views to City hall instead of the other way around."

What had the greatest impact on your position on fluoridation in Calgary’s water?: "My position is specifically a financial one and in my personal opinion we do not have the needed millions to retrofit our system."

"I have led the charge on this issue for the past 7 years working with AHS, the CMOH, the O'Brien Institute with Dr. William Ghali. I took forward a motion to Council which I managed to work with my colleagues on to support it. It was to accept Dr. Ghali's offer to conduct a comprehensive review of all the valid research in favor and opposed to fluoridation. It unfortunately didn't get enough votes on the current Council to direct that it be added to our water supply. I then supported this matter to be added as a plebiscite question in the October 18, 2021 civic election. I am hoping the result will be positive and that the new Council will have the will to proceed even tho plebiscites aren't mandatory to implement under the MGA."

"100% in favor of reinstating fluoride into our water."

Will you campaign openly for water fluoridation in Calgary as part of your campaign?: "I already have."

If the plebiscite vote favours fluoridation and you are elected a member of City Council, will you then work to have a motion placed before City Council by November 15, 2021?: "I will do it before then as I think it is critical."

What had the greatest impact on your position on fluoridation in Calgary’s water?: "My dentist said the results of the lack of fluoridation are devastating. We need to protect children, seniors, and citizens that are the most vulnerable. What does it say about a society that doesn't take these populations into considerations?"
