This video was filmed in Calgary in October 2019 thanks to the generosity of the Alberta Dental Association and College. The video describes the effects of the absence of water fluoridation in Calgary from the perspective of four Calgary oral health specialists and a mother of four children.
In this video, four oral health specialists talk about how the lack of fluoridation has harmed all their patients, no matter their socio-economic background. The mother relates how her oldest child has fine teeth because she has the longest time with fluoridation and how her third child, at only three years old, is waiting for dental care under general anesthetic because she grew up without fluoridation.
This problem is unnecessary. Calgarians had voted IN FAVOUR OF fluoridation in plebiscites in 1989 and 1998. There has been no fluoridation plebiscite since 1998. In 2011, Calgary City Council voted to cease providing fluoridation to Calgary residents.
Fluoridation is an effective and safe public health measure that tops up naturally occurring fluoride in the water to 0.7 parts per million. At this concentration, fluoride prevents dental decay by approximately 25%. Dental decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood and can affect everyone, especially seniors and persons with disabilities.
